I must be the luckiest man alive. In the past year I have won $95,015,643 in 49 lotteries.
You might think that this explains my lackadaisical attitude as I flip open my silver Dupont cigarette lighter and ponder the subject for another piece of journalism. Or should I have a go at another draft of my novel?
(The Dupont is the one that goes ping when you flip the top open. It is the most beautiful sound in the world – but that is a subject for another article.)
My attitude is real. I am that way, blessed with a zen sense of non-urgency. Alas, my winnings exist only on paper.
To be more precise, I have received 49 e-mail notices telling me that I have won this money. When I try to collect any of it, a strange thing happens. Invariably I get another notice that I have to send money to an agent who will secure the release of these funds. It’s all very complicated. European banking rules and currency regulations etc. Blah blah. The point is that I have to send them money.
I am being enticed through the looking glass into the wonderful world of internet fraud.
It begins when you receive an e-mail like this:

The warning about fraudulent e-mails is a nice touch. These lottery notices seem to emanate mainly from the UK, Spain, and the Netherlands. On closer inspection you may find lurking behind them an e-mail address in South America, Russia, Italy, or (as in this case) Africa.
If you respond and try to collect your prize you will receive a claim form and a declaration very like the one that follows. Ping. Let’s welcome gallant little Thailand to the ranks of internet scammers!

$750? Western Union? If you send this money you will never hear from them again. The game is over. You have been conned.
Erick, or Jacquelyn, is modest in his/her aim to part you from your money. Another scammer has asked me to send $15,000 to an agent in Amsterdam.
Do not be tempted, my friends. Some of these lotteries pretend to be linked to Microsoft or Hewlett Packard. One claims to be associated with the estate of Princess Diana. They are all fake.
Be warned. One day the internet will be a safe place. It is not safe now. The crooks are swarming all over it. They are ingenious and persistent.
My “winnings” are no more than a veil of smoke floating in cyberspace. But I have kept the notices and like to read them sometimes. It’s grand to dream.
Ping. Back to the novel.
